Citizen Science projects are collaborations between scientists and members of the public. This often involves community data-gathering for analysis and use by researchers across many diverse disciplines.
What is the CSUN Citizen Science Club?
The Citizen Science Club empowers students and community members to engage in hands-on, research-driven projects that address real-world issues using the principles of STEAHM: Science, Technology + Engineering, Entrepreneurship + Business, Arts, Humanities, and Mathematics. We welcome students of all backgrounds and skill levels to join our community and share our love for Citizen Science. Our club is open to everyone, regardless of major or experience.

RecyKOOL: Maximize Waste Diversion Through Citizen Science, Data Analytics and AI Digital Twin
RecyKOOL focuses on improving recycling habits and reducing methane emissions in urban communities. We’re looking for students and community members to help collect data, engage residents at our partner research site, and support sustainable solutions.

Woniya Wichoni (Breath of Life) – An Air Quality ProjectThat Centers on Community, Land, and Climate Justice
Woniya Wichoni is an innovative project dedicated to providing air quality information and addressing social challenges across the Standing Rock Sioux Nation in North Dakota. This initiative seeks to promote better health, environmental awareness, and community strength.
The project includes Woophe, a mobile app that not only monitors air quality but also serves as a vital community hub. The app keeps residents informed about local events, provides access to mutual aid resources, strengthens social connections, and helps users stay updated on their surrounding environment.

Why should I join the Citizen Science Club?
Joining the Citizen Science Club is a great way to make a real impact on our community while gaining valuable experience. It is an opportunity to develop skills in research, problem solving, and team building, while building connections with professionals and fellow students. Plus, it’s a chance to expand your work experience in STEAHM fields and enhance Graduate School applications.
How often does the Club meet?
We hold general meetings and organize events, workshops, and field trips at different points throughout the semester. Keep an eye on our Discord and Instagram plus the ARCS Calendar of Events for updates.
Can I still participate if I’m new to research?
Absolutely! No prior research experience is needed. Our projects are designed to be collaborative and educational, so you’ll learn as you go.
